Mommy’s Intuition Working With The Owlet

Mommy’s Intuition Working With The Owlet

My nine-month-old girl, Saylor, was sent home from daycare because of a high fever. I was at work so my mother picked up Saylor and took her to the pediatrician. Saylor was diagnosed with an ear infection and prescribed antibiotics.

The next 24 hours, I watched Saylor’s temperature with a temporal thermometer and I gave her ibuprofen, as needed. The following evening, I noticed she just didn't seem herself, and as a nurse, this concerned me. I checked her temperature and it was 100.4 F which made me aware that her high temperature may be returning.

I placed the Owlet sock on my sleeping baby, as I do every night. After about 30 minutes, I looked at the Owlet app on my phone and saw her heart rate at 196 bpm. My calm nurse demeanor disappeared, as this was not a patient with a high heart rate, this was my own baby. I checked that the Owlet was still properly in place on her foot, which it was. I tried to count her pulse manually, but I couldn't because her heart beat was too fast.

It turns out, the cause of Saylor's high heart rate was in fact due to her high temperature returning. After a dose of Tylenol, Saylor’s high heart rate and fever subsided. As she drifted off peacefully to sleep, I put the Owlet baby monitor on her again. Her heart rate was still higher than it usually was due to her being sick, but it was within my comfort zone and what I had seen in the past during periods of illness.

The next day, I reflected on the entire situation. Without the Owlet, would my daughter’s situation gone differently? Regardless, thanks to the Owlet and my mommy intuition, I was able to help my baby. My baby girl is feeling better and back to her usual, smiling self. Thank you, Owlet.
