How Two Babies in Nebraska Brought Peace of Mind to Families All Over the World

Sometimes, the worst of circumstances can bring about something truly remarkable. The Briggs & Barrett Project is a non-profit organization created out of tragedy. It all began when Melissa West and Allison Uecker, two mothers from Nebraska, each experienced the horror of their children passing away due to SIDS at three months old.

Out of this nightmare came The Briggs & Barrett Project, an organization dedicated to preventing incidents like these by providing newborn parents with SIDS and SUID education, tools, and resources.

What Does the Briggs & Barrett Project Do?

Formed in 2018, The Briggs & Barrett Project was born out of the hope that something positive could come out of this devastating tragedy. With Melissa and Allison at its helm as co-founders, the organization quickly gained momentum. With support from family members and friends, they were able to create an amazing program to meet their goals: educate new parents on SIDS awareness, provide resources such as cribs and monitors to deserving families, provide financial assistance to those in need, and create an online platform for open dialogue about these issues.

Owlet + Briggs and Barrett Partnership

Owlet and Briggs & Barrett Project have partnered together to bring the Dream Sock to families in need. The Dream Sock is a smart baby monitor that tracks Baby’s Sleep Quality Indicators—like heart rate and oxygen level—so parents and caregivers can monitor what matters most.

A $299 donation to the Briggs & Barrett Project will get you a Dream Sock for yourself and for a family in need. Families who aren’t able to afford a Dream Sock can fill out an online application to be considered for a free Dream Sock. This partnership allows deserving families the ability to experience Owlet’s award-winning technology for themselves.

The Impact

Through unwavering dedication to their mission, The Briggs & Barrett Project has already made strides in raising awareness about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) while making a difference in the lives of thousands of families across the country. As they continue their work towards their goal—to decrease infant mortality—Melissa and Allison serve as inspiring examples that when there is tragedy, there can be healing, so long as we have the courage to take action.

“No matter how long it’s been, we still miss our children. Seasons change, flowers bloom, leaves fall, the cycle keeps going. The sun comes up and it goes down. Some days we want to hide under the covers. Then there’s other days we think we might make it and that we really aren’t losing our minds.

For some of you reading this, you may also be missing a child. Remember, we have to hold onto the hope of a glad reunion one day. There will no longer be tears or sadness. Just happiness and celebrating forever. Hold onto your faith and those memories you have. We will see our babies again one day.” - Melissa West, Co-Founder of The Briggs & Barrett Project
